Frequently asked questions about electric towel rails

Electric towel rails, for bathrooms, use either thermal fluid or dry thermal elements to keep spaces warm and dry your towels.  Oil filled electric towel rails heat a specially formulated thermal fluid within the casings.  The oil evenly spreads heat along the length of the rails, radiating warmth into the room and drying any towels straight over the bars.  This type of electric towel rail comes pre-filled, so there is no mess or hassle.  Dry thermal towel rails use a stretch of wire that conducts electricity.  When warm, this wire emits radiant heat across the front surface of the towel rail, warming anything directly in front of it.  The difference between dry thermal and thermal fluid towel rails is largely aesthetic.

Dry thermal towel rails come with a flat front similar to an infrared panel, whereas thermal fluid towel rails tend to feature ladder shaped designs.  Towel radiators with oil retain heat better than dry thermal towel rails, making them the better choice for heating larger, more expansive bathrooms.

Heated towel rails can be left on all the time.  They have an energy saving thermostat and timers so you can reduce temperature during the night and day time, when the bathroom may have minimum use, and increase the temperature during bathing and shower times.  Doing this, will help to reduce damp and condensation.

Using electrical equipment in bathrooms may pose various safety risks.  Therefore, IEE wiring regulations are in place to minimise these risks by dividing bathrooms into zones and determining which electrical equipment can be used in which bathroom zone.  While all certified electricians are expected to know these zones the following list and illustrations can be used as guidance for non-professionals.  Please note that we recommend that all customers use the services of a certified electrician to install their electric towel rail.

Zone 0

The interior of a bathtub or shower cubicle which can hold water and is likely to be affected by splashes.

Zone 1

The area directly above Zone 0, which is vertically limited to 2250mm up to the bottom of the bathtub.

Zone 2

The area beyond Zones 0 + 1, which stretches 600mm horizontally and up to 2250mm vertically.  Zone2 also includes any windows with a sill next to the bath.

Zone 3

The area beyond Zone 2 which extends 2400mm horizontally and up to 2250mm vertically.
